Skylake Closet

Skylake Synagogue, located at 1850 NE 183rd Street in North Miami Beach, has introduced a unique enterprise – The Closet – to South Florida. The project is housed in a small building, next to the shul, and has been renovated to look like a boutique shop.

The story of The Closet is quite compelling. The idea came from Hindy Rosenberg a few months after her house burned down in 2009. Hindy, the former rebbetzin of Skylake Synagogue, was overwhelmed by the response she received in her time of need. The community helped her family in many ways. One way was by collecting clothing.

Even with eight children, there was no way she and her family could make use of the copious donations. Hindy conferred with two friends, Dana Tangir and Karina Chocron. They decided to open a place in the Jewish community where people could bring gently used clothing in excellent condition for those in need.

The Closet, in operation since 2010 and run by volunteers, is open three days a week – Tuesday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Thursday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The shelves at The Closet are filled with attractive items. The atmosphere is lovely. Clothes are offered for men, women and children. All items are priced very low.

Clients who shop at The Closet are treated with dignity. They are not taking a handout but are paying for their purchases. They also know that they, too, are giving. All profits of the shop go to charitable Jewish organizations such as the local kosher food bank and the shul’s hardship fund.

Skylake Synagogue a Zionistic, Orthodox congregation made up of Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Americans, Israelis and Latinos from all over South America and Mexico. The shul offers an array of opportunities for Jews of all ages and walks of life. Everyone feels welcome.

The dynamic spiritual leader is Rabbi Ariel Yeshurun, a graduate of Chevron Yeshiva Rabbinic College in Jerusalem and the Beit-Amiel Institute. Rabbi Yeshurun previously served 11 years as rabbi at the Shaarei Tsedek Orthodox Jewish Congregation in the island of Curacao, Netherlands Antilles.
